First ever 5km race!

20 Jan

This morning I completed my first ever 5km race! I was feeling both nervous and excited for it. I have been training for about 6 weeks, I hadn’t reached the 5km distance yet, but I knew I wasn’t far off it. It was a hot morning, the race started at 8am, and by 8:20am it was drizzling and muggy.

The race didn’t go quite as I expected, I have never taken part in a 5km race, so I hadn’t mentally prepared for the huge number of people at the beginning.. all starting at once! In my training I had reached the ability to run 20 minutes non-stop… unfortunately today I only managed to run 10 minutes before I had to walk. The race track had way more hills than I had expected, the huge number of people totally threw me, and I wasn’t 100% sure about where the track was going… but I will be better prepared for next time.

I actually found that the second half of the race went better for me. I managed to run longer segments and even managed to run the whole last kilometer of the race! I was very proud of myself for running down the home stretch and under the finish line without stopping!

My unofficial race time is around the 43 minutes mark, I am very happy with that. I was hoping to make it in around 45 minutes! The next race is in 3 weeks, so hopefully my legs will be even stronger by then and I’ll make it in closer to 40 minutes! :)

I’ll leave you with a photo of the finish line:
